More about Martha

I work from looking, to make a translation from seeing to putting something down with paint or charcoal like a writer putting into words an experience or story, something heard or felt.

I get my best work outside, alone, without interruption, like playing a piece of music one note after another. I am most influenced by Modernism, painting of the late 19thc and the first sixty years of the 20thc., the experimentation and intuition.

I studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, Smith College, and Rhode Island School of Design. I’ve exhibited in the United States since 1967, in Italy since 2000, and have taught in art schools, colleges and universities, summer programs and graduate programs since the 1970s.
